Safety is Our Middle Name–And Top Priority!

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has reported that 21.4% of worker fatalities in 2015 were in construction. Because of the risks of construction work, safety is a top priority at Kenseal: we strive for the safety of our workers, customers, and their families.

Our company value on safety is as follows:

Safety First, Safety Always. Nothing is more important than ensuring that every AH Harris associate goes home safely at the end of the day. Safety is everyone’s job and we all have an obligation to help spot and correct unsafe actions. Even if we are tired or rushed, take the time to be safe. Each of us has a duty to look out for the well-being of our fellow associates and customers.”

Because we care about the safety of our employees, we send helpful safety tips weekly to remind them how to be safe on the job and at home. Here are some that will also help you be safe at your work and at home.

  1. Be aware and constantly take surveys of your surroundings.
  2. When driving, turn around to make sure it is safe to reverse or merge. Do not just trust your mirrors or back-up camera.
  3. Never overextend yourself when picking up or moving objects.

In addition to our safety tips, we also protect the well-being of our employees through our wellness program, in which we set goals as a company for exercise and eating right.

Everyone deserves to go home safe and healthy. We look out for our employees and our customers by valuing the safety and health of all.

New Haven, Connecticut

The Kenseal branch in New Haven, Connecticut is extremely unique because it brings the Kenseal and A.H. Harris sales teams under one roof. Serving as an office for two divisions of the same company, the New Haven branch has a dynamic unlike any other. “One thing for sure is we are very busy,” says Kenseal Inside Sales Representative John Ryan. “The new building is great and the people are all helpful.” Kevin Harp, an Inside Sales Representative from AH Harris, says, “Our crossing selling between Kenseal and Harris Lines has increased, as well as our overall customer base. With the many years of experience and similar company and cultural values, our customers have been very satisfied [with the merge].”

The A.H. Harris New Haven facility is best in class with a 30,000 SF warehouse, 1,243 pallet spaces, 2 loading bays, 1 large loading dock and ample parking. The huge store and showroom with multiple delivery trucks are just some of the awesome benefits that have come from joining forces.

With a mixture of “rookies” who have been with us for less than five years and “pros” that have been with us for decades, this combination Harris and Kenseal facility provides a variety of knowledge and experience for all of our customers. Some of our employees’ favorite events are outside of working hours, when the office bonds together with fun and festive activities. It just goes to show that we, Kenseal and AH Harris, are combining into one great team.

A little over a year after the merge with AH Harris, we are happy to share a physical office to further our union of cultural values and work ideals. We’re better together, and together we are moving forward towards success!

Meet the Leadership Team: Amy Missel

In this next edition of our Meet the Team series, we had the pleasure of talking with Strategic Project Manager, Amy Missel! Amy has been with Kenseal for almost 24 years, holding various roles in her time with our company! She is a trusted resource for our team and is dedicated to many exciting projects and initiatives this year.  Let’s hear more from Amy…

What is your role at Kenseal?

“I am the Strategic Project Manager.”

How long have you been with the company?

“I’ve been with Kenseal for almost 24 years, starting as an Assistant Credit Manager in 1993.”

What’s the most satisfying aspect of your job?

“Being a trusted resource for other Kenseal and Harris employees. I really enjoy working with others and understanding their challenges, seeing things from their perspective. Not only does it help me offer more appropriate solutions (and make people happy), but the more people I talk to, the more well-rounded my understanding of opportunities for efficiency and optimization within the Harris organization becomes.”

What are your greatest treasures?

“My greatest treasures are my boys — McGuire(12), Aedan(8), and David(51). David and I do our best to help our boys realize that it’s not the amount of ‘stuff’ we acquire in life, as much as it is the people and experiences that we encounter; we feel that this perspective will open their eyes to so much more of what the world has to offer during their lifetimes. For the past few Christmases, we’ve gradually stopped giving gifts and started giving experiences. Each of us enjoys traveling, and we grow as a family when we can escape the day-to-day schedule and find new experiences together. This year, their ‘experiences’ include a long weekend at Great Wolf Lodge in the Poconos, a day trip to ‘Diggerland’ in NJ, another long weekend in NYC later this year, and numerous trips to Ocean Isle Beach, NC with extended family.”

Who are the heroes in your life?

“My parents — my father gave me his stubbornness and his work ethic. Growing up, his family offered him lots of love, but they didn’t always have a lot of money. He knew that, someday, he wanted more for his wife and kids than he had growing up, and he worked hard to get it. And I have no doubt passed on his stubbornness to his grandchildren! My mother is sensitive but strong; that strength wasn’t always evident when we were kids, but looking back, it was most definitely there. She continues to have the right advice that will help pull me through any situation. My parents keep themselves extremely active and strive to enjoy life every day – definitely something for us all to strive for!”

What is one fun fact about you?

“I love to eat. I like to call it one of the few ‘necessary luxuries’ of life. If you’re going to eat, eat something that you really enjoy. And I love to cook, for myself and for others! When food is made with love, you can taste it. There aren’t many experiences that warm my heart as much as setting a big home cooked meal down in front of friends and family, and watching them enjoy it. That truly brings me joy!”

Thank you, Amy!

Branch Spotlight: Norfolk, VA

The Kenseal team in southern Virginia relocated to Norfolk, Va. in 2014 from their former location in Chesapeake. With a loading dock, delivery vehicle and an experienced team, they are fully equipped to provide our valued customers with exceptional service. Let’s learn more about the team in this branch spotlight!

Sam Fagan, Sales Manager- My greatest accomplishment at Kenseal is being able to coach a team that understands how to grow and excel! Helping my teammates become successful is one of the best parts of my job. I love boats and the water and will retire on a boat one day. Fun fact – I used to be a foster parent and have had as many as 4 foster kids in my house at once!

Katie Chapple, Sales and Operations Coordinator–  I was born and raised in Norfolk, VA. I am married to my high school sweetheart. We have 3 awesome boys. Between the 3 boys and sports, we spend all of our time on the baseball, soccer, and football fields. We are huge Oriole and Steeler fans. My house is an all out sport zone. In addition, I spend a lot of time with my extended family here at Kenseal. Kenseal isn’t just a job, it’s a career. I am happy to be surrounded by such an awesome team.

Jon Wells, Inside Sales Representative –  I am a family man in every sense of the word. My family is by far the most important thing in my life. I have a lovely wife of 8 years, a six year old, and a four year old. I love cooking and also watching/playing baseball. I am a die hard Atlanta Braves fan and a San Francisco 49ers fan. I enjoy spending time on the shores of the Outer Banks and in the Caribbean.

Cameron Taylor, Outside Sales Representative –  I am a local Hampton Roads native and a graduate of Old Dominion University  in Norfolk, Virginia. Not only am I a huge football fan (Philadelphia Eagles) but I love the outdoors (hunting, fishing, etc.). Most weekends you will either find me in front of a TV watching a game, up in a tree-stand, or out on the water. With this being my first post-grad job I feel that the sky’s the limit and look forward to what the future holds for me here at Kenseal.

Max Simpson, Material Handler and Driver – I always enjoy spending time with my family and watching sports. I’m a huge football fan and you can always find me cheering on the great Dallas Cowboys! Whenever I have the time, I also like to watch movies and listen to music.
